Weekend Player or Twice a Season? Match the Golf Upgrade to Your Rounds

A buying guide to picking your next golf purchase at PGA TOUR Superstore by how often you play, from a fitted driver to wedges, putters and the basics.

Count your rounds before you count your clubs

The fastest way to waste money on golf equipment is to buy what the player beside you bought. Someone out four times a week and someone out twice a summer need different things, and the gap between them is repetition more than skill.

So start with the number. How many rounds did you play last year, and where on the card does the damage happen? If the misses are off the tee, that points one way. If you are losing shots from 100 yards in, or three-putting, that points somewhere else.

PGA TOUR Superstore carries Callaway, TaylorMade, PING, Titleist, COBRA, Mizuno, Cleveland, Srixon, Wilson, Tour Edge, XXIO, Odyssey and L.A.B. Golf. The club categories run across drivers, irons, putters, wedges, hybrids and fairway woods. The sections below sort those options by the player each one suits.

The weekly player: get fitted, then buy the driver or irons

If you play most weeks, the clubs work hard enough to justify a fitting first. STUDIO Fittings with PGA-certified club fitters start at $99.99, and the Practice Centers use indoor bays with Trackman simulator technology to track performance metrics and analyze ball flight. The driver or iron set you walk out with was chosen against your numbers.

A driver fitting suits the player whose score swings on where the tee shot ends up. A fresh iron set suits the player who strikes it well enough to notice his distances have stopped being consistent.

One note before you order irons: under the Performance Guarantee, custom iron sets must be at least a six-club set including a pitching wedge in sequential order, and the whole set must be presented at the same time to be eligible. Buy the set as a set, not in pieces.

A couple of rounds a month: wedges and the putter

Play a few times a month and the short game is where the strokes are sitting. Wedges and putters are the sensible next purchase when the budget is finite, and both sit among the club categories stocked, alongside hybrids and fairway woods if the gaps in your bag are longer than that.

A putter is worth handling in person. Fittings are offered for Driver, Iron, Woods/Hybrids or Putter, so the putter is covered by the same fitting service as the long clubs.

If contact is the problem rather than the club, a lesson may be the better spend. Lessons with PGA-certified instructors start at $79.99 for adults, and instructors can use simulator and launch monitor technology. Clinics are also offered. Club Repair sits on the services list too, alongside the Golf Learning Center, Buy Online Pickup In-Store and Book a Tee Time. Practice sessions are booked online.

Twice a season: shoes, bag and ball basics

If golf is an outing rather than a habit, fix the things that make the day uncomfortable. Golf shoes are stocked for men, women and kids, with FootJoy, ECCO, Nike, adidas and PUMA among the footwear brands. Apparel and accessories are stocked as well, and the store also sells tennis and pickleball equipment if the family splits across sports.

Ordering is straightforward: free 1-hour in-store pickup and free shipping over $99. Orders ship Monday through Friday with the exception of holidays, and many locations also process and ship ground orders through the weekend. Products may be returned in original condition within 30 days for a full refund with receipt, new, unused and in original packaging.

Gift cards come in electronic and physical formats, which answers the occasional golfer in your family you cannot shop for. There are 74 stores across 27 states, and the Store Locator will tell you which one is nearest.

Trade in the old set and claim what it is worth

Old clubs in the garage are credit you have not claimed. In store, visit the Services Desk, an Associate confirms the trade-in value, and you get in-store credit to use the same day. Online, select the club from a drop-down menu, add it to the cart and complete the order; a prepaid FedEx label is provided for orders of $50.00 or more, and a gift card arrives within two business days of the received date. Drivers, irons, putters and more are accepted, and the displayed value is guaranteed if the club is free from excessive wear and defects.

The Performance Guarantee covers the hesitation that delays most upgrades: a new club may be returned within 90 days of the original purchase for 100% credit toward an in-store purchase that day of similar product, with the original receipt.

Players Club is free to join, with 250 Points equal to a $5 Reward, an annual birthday gift and member-only discounts. Players Club PLUS Golf & Tennis is $299.99 for the year and includes one free fitting, one free lesson, 20% off single in-store lessons and fittings, free standard ground shipping online, one free practice session per day and 30 free grip installations. Trade in, get fitted, and play the season with clubs chosen for you.
