Measure on Monday, Install by Saturday: One Project, Start to Finish
A step-by-step walkthrough of one weekend project at The Home Depot: measuring, building the cart, pickup options, renting the tool, and finishing by Saturday.

Monday night: tape measure, then the list
Start where the project is, not at the keyboard. Measure the opening, the run of wall, the square footage of floor, and write the numbers down before you forget which wall was which. Then open the site and let the Project Calculators do the arithmetic you would rather not do twice — they exist for exactly this moment, alongside the DIY Projects and Ideas pages if you want to see how the job goes together before you commit.
From there the list almost writes itself. The navigation is split into the categories you are already thinking in: Lumber & Composites, Flooring, Hardware, Electrical, Plumbing, Paint, Doors & Windows, Lighting, Kitchen, Bath. Work down your measurements and add a line for each. Ten minutes on a Monday night is the difference between one order and three trips.
Tuesday: turning the list into a cart
Now move the list into the cart. Search each item, check the quantity against your measurements, and add it. The Store Finder tells you which location you are shopping, which matters more than people expect, because products shown as available are normally stocked but inventory levels are not guaranteed. Ordering on Tuesday rather than Friday evening gives you room if something has moved.

This is also the point to decide what you are not doing yourself. If the project touches an appliance, you can add Home Depot delivery and installation at checkout rather than sorting it out later, or request a Pro Referral installation service after the appliance is delivered. If the job is bigger than one weekend — a kitchen remodel, cabinets, countertops, flooring, a furnace or central air — you can visit a store to schedule a free consultation, and for some services, such as heating and air conditioning, a free in-home consultation is arranged. There is no fee to schedule an in-home consultation with the Concierge Flooring Specialist.
Wednesday: how the order reaches you
The order is placed, so pick how it gets to your driveway. Free In-Store Pickup in 2 Hours suits the small, awkward stuff you want in hand today: fasteners, a box of blades, the trim piece you forgot. Free Curbside Pickup covers the rest without leaving the driver’s seat, and curbside is available daily from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m., so a weekday lunch break is enough to collect the week’s materials.
Appliances are the exception worth planning around, since delivery and installation can be added at checkout. For everything you are hauling yourself, the same store rents Load N’ Go trucks and trailers, which turns one awkward trip into a short errand. Design services are also on offer for projects such as kitchen remodeling and cabinet installation, if Wednesday is the day you admit the scope grew.
Thursday: rent the tool instead of buying it
One job rarely justifies owning the machine. The Tool Rental Center carries everything from smaller hand tools to larger machinery such as trenchers, with terms of 4-hour, daily, weekly and monthly. Rental hours match the store they sit in, and they are open seven days a week, so a Thursday pickup for a Saturday install is a short conversation, not a project of its own.

Bring a government-issued photo ID, such as a driver’s license or passport, plus a valid credit card for the deposit — required except in select states. Before you leave, an associate checks that the tool works, and if something is wrong with it you can bring it back to the Tool Rental Center for a replacement. Buy Damage Protection at the time of rental and you are not responsible for repair costs if the tool breaks through normal use.
Saturday afternoon: check the order, finish the job
When you open the curbside hatch, check what you have against your Monday list before anything gets unwrapped past the point of no return. Count the boxes, match the quantities, set aside anything you over-bought. Most merchandise can be returned within 90 days with proof of purchase, with noted exceptions — and with The Home Depot Consumer Credit Card, the Pro Xtra Credit Card or a Commercial Account, that window is 365 days from the date of purchase for a full refund, unless noted in the in-store return exceptions. If a question comes up mid-install, the Customer Service Center is there, or you can text 38698.
Then build it. The materials are on the floor, the rented tool is in the driveway on a term you chose, and the return window is long enough to forgive a miscount. All of that starts with the cart you fill tonight.
