Which New Balance Line Fits the Way You Walk and Run?

Made in USA, Fresh Foam X, FuelCell or the lifestyle classics: how to pick the New Balance family that matches the job you need your shoes to do.

Open the men’s or women’s shoe pages on newbalance.com and the grid fills with numbers: 990, 1080, 880, 574, 9060. To a regular shopper they look like a code. Each number belongs to a family, though, and each family was built for a different kind of day, from a ten-mile run to a long Saturday on your feet in the city.

The quickest way to choose is to ignore the colorways for a minute and decide which job you want the shoe to do. Once you know that, the right line picks itself, and the rest of the decision is fit and color. Below are the four main families on the US store, with the one most people ask about first.

👟 Compare New Balance lines side by side

Made in USA is where the 990 lives, and it is the line to start with

The Made in USA collection is the part of the range that people build a wardrobe around. New Balance states that its Made in USA footwear “contains a domestic value of 70% or more,” which is the standard it uses before putting that label on a shoe. The 990 sits at the center of this collection, and the store lists more than one version of it, including the 990v6 alongside earlier versions such as the 990v4 and 990v5.

What the 990v6 brings. New Balance describes the first 990 as a shoe whose designers were tasked with making the best running shoe on the market, and it says the v6 keeps that mandate with performance-inspired updates. The upper drops the usual midfoot saddle so the suede and synthetic overlays run from heel to toe over a mesh base. Underfoot it pairs FuelCell foam, which the brand says gives a propulsive feel, with ENCAP cushioning, a soft foam core held in a durable polyurethane rim for all-day support.

Who it suits. If you want one pair of gray sneakers that works with jeans, chinos and a commute, and you care where your shoes are made, this is the line. Some shoppers prefer the earlier versions for their shape, so compare the v4, v5 and v6 side by side before you commit.

Fresh Foam X is the line for daily miles and long days standing

Fresh Foam X is New Balance’s cushioning family, and it covers a lot of ground. The 1080 is its best-known model. New Balance says the Fresh Foam X midsole in the 1080v14 is built for smooth transitions from landing to push-off, and that the soft foam adds cushioning without adding overall weight. The v14 also brings a triple jacquard mesh upper with more breathability in key areas and extra rubber in high-wear zones for durability.

The wider family. The same foam shows up in the 880, a daily trainer, and in the More, which sits at the softest end of the range. If you run most days at an easy pace, walk a lot for work, or simply want your feet to feel looked after at the end of the day, start your search in Fresh Foam X.

FuelCell is the line for runners chasing a faster time

FuelCell is the family New Balance built for speed. When the brand launched the platform, it described FuelCell as having “the highest rebound properties of any New Balance performance foam,” created by its Innovation Design Studio to help athletes make their fast even faster. That bouncier foam is what you feel in FuelCell trainers such as the Propel, and it is the same foam that now appears in the 990v6.

How to choose between the two running lines. Think of Fresh Foam X as the comfortable everyday choice and FuelCell as the shoe you reach for on tempo days, races and the runs you want to feel quick. Plenty of runners own one of each and rotate them through the week.

The lifestyle classics are about shape, history and everyday wear

Not every New Balance is meant for training. A large part of the store is given over to models people wear for how they look and feel around town.

The 574. New Balance calls the 574 its “unlikeliest icon.” It was built as a reliable hybrid road and trail shoe on a wider last than the narrow racing shoes before it, and the brand credits that uncomplicated, rugged versatility for turning it into a closet staple. The store lists the 574 Core in multiple widths for men, women and kids, which makes it an easy family buy.

The 9060. For a chunkier, more modern look, the 9060 reworks details from the 99X series with a design inspired by the Y2K era. New Balance points to its wavy, wider midsole with ABZORB and SBS cushioning, a translucent heel device and a diamond-pattern outsole borrowed from the classic 860.

Who these suit less. If you plan to log serious running mileage, the lifestyle models are not the place to look. Keep them for the weekend and buy a Fresh Foam X or FuelCell shoe for training.

Getting more for your money on newbalance.com

Once you know your line, a few habits help you get the pair you want at the best price on the day.

Join the rewards program first. New Balance says members of its rewards program get free shipping, free returns, early access to select products and special promotions. Signing up before you check out costs nothing and makes it easier to try a size and send it back if the fit is off.

Use the width filter. Many New Balance models are sold in several widths, which is one of the best reasons to buy direct. If you usually size up to get room across the forefoot, try your true length in a wider fit.

Compare versions and colors. The store often carries more than one version of a model, and prices vary by version and colorway, so check current prices across them before you choose. The newest version is not always the one you will like best.

Pick the job, pick the line, then let fit and color do the rest. Whichever family you land on, you are buying from a range that has kept its best models in production for decades because people keep coming back to them.
